8:53 - extra paper in gum? DOH. Another error. All gum in packets comes with a wrapper to dispose of it, it's called... "the wrapper".

I've been living in Japan for three years now.#15 - This "super umbrella" was part of a series of "unuseful tools" created by inventor/artist Kenji Kawakami in the 1990s. Not a real thing, although the racks and wrappers in stores are. Search for "chindogu".#14 - I don't know about drink cans, but there is definitely braille on signs in train stations.#13 - It's true that students clean the schools, but they're about as dedicated to it as you'd imagine.#12 - I don't live in a big city, and there"s plenty of open space and regular parking where I am. But even when I visit the city, mechanized parking like this is still the exception, not the rule.#11 - My wife is a nurse, and I teach at a JHS; we can verify that this is (mostly) true. Search "kyushoku".#10 - Some people like mayo, some don't. But hearing, "Japanese traditional Kewpie mayonnaise," is like hearing, "American traditional Kraft cheese."#9 - Yep, this is a thing, but only in private homes.#8 - These aren't particularly Japanese, you know? They're everywhere.#7 - Another "chindogu" (see #15). This picture is actually taken from an American book about chindogu that I own! Not a real thing.#6 - Real, and pretty cool.#5 - Nonsense. Go search for "gokun party", "Japan nightclubs", or "enjo kosai".#4 - There are lots of vending machines, but 99% of them are normal: drinks, ice cream, candy bars, and cigarettes. The handful of weird ones surprise the locals, too.#3 - More nonsense. In three years of traveling around Japan and chatting with strangers and my students, this video is literally the first time that I've even heard of this.#2 - Clear colas have been a thing all around the world since the 1980s.#1 - Yes, some packs of gum (usually the bigger ones that don't have individually-wrapped pieces) do come with little pads of paper to wrap up your chewed gum.BONUS - Yes, one nice thing in Japan is that when you buy food it almost always does really look like the photo. It's a combination of less BS in advertising and more care in production.
